Nestled in the heart of Wichita, Kansas, the Sedgwick County Zoo (SCZ) stands as a beacon of wildlife conservation and family-friendly adventure. Since its inception in 1971, this 247-acre zoological park has evolved into one of the nation’s premier wildlife destinations, housing over 3,000 animals across nearly 400 species. It is proud to be ranked as the #1 Outdoor Family Tourist Attraction in Kansas.

Welcome to the WILD Life

What sets SCZ apart is its innovative approach to animal exhibits. Conceptualized nearly 60 years ago, it was one of the first zoos in the country to organize animal habitats geographically, allowing visitors to traverse continents as they explore the habitats. From the African savannas to the Asian forests and across the North American prairie, each exhibit immerses guests in the natural environments of the animals .

One of the Zoo’s crown jewels is the Reed Family Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley. This exhibit is the third-largest elephant habitat in the U.S., featuring over five acres of outdoor space and an 18,000-square-foot indoor facility. It also boasts the world’s largest elephant pool, holding 550,000 gallons of water and allows guests the opportunity to share the canal on a boat tour.

Level Up Your Visit

Beyond the impressive collection of animals, SCZ offers several other experiences that enrich any visit:

  • Wild Encounters: These behind-the-scenes tours provide intimate interactions with animals like rhinos, penguins, and Aldabra tortoises. Guests can get up close to feed the animals and chat one-on-one with an animal care expert to learn about worldwide conservation efforts.
  • Attractions: Hop on the Safari Express for a unique perspective of the Zoo, taking visitors on a journey around the entire property and revealing behind-the-scenes views. Take a spin through the canal on a leisurely boat ride. Or get hands-on while feeding a giraffe or the stingrays in Stingray Cove.
  • Botanical Beauty: While primarily known for its animal habitats, the Zoo also features remarkable landscaping and gardens throughout. The Zoo’s Tropics habitat combines both birds and botanicals in an indoor aviary with free-flight birds and lush tropical vegetation. Visitors have praised it as one of the best they’ve ever seen, offering a serene spot to relax amidst lush plant life.

Conservation and Community

Sedgwick County Zoo is not just a place to observe animals; it’s a hub for conservation and education. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, SCZ actively participates in its Species Survival Plans, aiming to maintain genetic diversity and population sustainability for threatened and endangered species. Notably, in 2025, the Zoo has welcomed two African elephant calves, with two more still on the way – a significant milestone in its conservation efforts.

SCZ is dedicated to its mission to inspire respect and conservation of wildlife and wild places by building connections within the community. The Zoo has built a stellar reputation in Wichita and beyond for being committed to transparency and mission-based communication efforts while showcasing its excellent standard of animal care.
