Wednesday, June 24th – Coming Soon

Your journey begins at Scotchtown, the beautifully preserved plantation where Henry lived and raised his family. This is where he developed his voice and ideas that would later influence a nation. Next, take a short drive to the Historic Hanover Courthouse, one of the oldest courthouses still standing in Virginia. Here, in 1763, a young Henry argued the Parsons’ Cause, a pivotal legal case that challenged British authority and brought him to prominence. Actors bring this moment to life with an engaging reenactment you can witness inside the same courtroom where it happened. When it’s time for lunch, enjoy a meal at the Hanover Tavern. Originally established in the 18th century and frequented by Henry himself while he studied law and tended bar, this historic tavern has hosted travelers and thinkers alike for centuries. Finish your history-filled day at Polegreen Church, a site that reflects the struggle for religious freedom in colonial Virginia. Though the original building was destroyed during the Civil War, its outline has been reconstructed and serves as a striking reminder of the early American pursuit of civil and religious liberty.

Tuesday, June 23rd – Coming Soon

Wednesday, June 24th – Coming Soon

The morning will be spent exploring Maymont’s magnificent gardens and landscapes, which are truly unlike anything else in the City of Richmond. Maymont’s naturalistic Japanese Garden, the oldest public Japanese garden on the East Coast, offers a striking contrast to the formality of the Italian Garden. Descending through the Japanese Garden’s distinctive gates feels like stepping onto another continent. The space is cool, shaded, and intimate, with muted sounds that naturally invite quiet reflection.

In contrast, the Italian Garden blends classical geometric design, layered terraces, vibrant colors, and historic vistas to create a more formal experience, all set within the dramatic terrain of the James River fall line.

The day continues at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, consistently ranked among the best botanical gardens in North America. This award-winning, 50-acre property offers year-round beauty, along with dining and shopping. Highlights include a classical domed Conservatory, the only one of its kind in the mid-Atlantic, and more than a dozen themed gardens such as the Children’s Garden, Rose Garden, Asian Valley, and Cherry Tree Walk.

With stunning scenery, peaceful pathways, and plenty of moments to pause and take it all in, it promises to be a relaxing and memorable day surrounded by some of the Richmond Region’s most beautiful gardens.

Wednesday, June 24th – Coming Soon

This small group experience will bring you east of downtown Richmond to beautiful New Kent County. We begin our day at Old Tavern Farm in Quinton, a fourth-generation family-owned farm rooted in history. The farm sits on land originally home to Frayser’s Ordinary, a roadside tavern dating back to the late 1600s that served travelers moving between Richmond and Williamsburg. Over centuries the site has been continuously cultivated, and today the Bryant family grows sustainable produce on roughly 35 acres, raising vegetables, fruit, pasture-raised hogs, heritage hens and more while sharing farm knowledge with visitors. On this experience you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the farm’s operations, learn about its sustainable practices, and have the chance to pick your own fresh lettuce destined for a farm–to–table lunch crafted with ingredients straight from the fields.

Your journey also includes a visit to St. Peter’s Church, one of Virginia’s oldest surviving colonial churches, completed around 1703 and recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its remarkably preserved early-18th-century architecture. This historic parish is known as the “First Church of the First First-Lady,” a nod to its connection with Martha Dandridge Washington. The rector of St. Peter’s, the Rev. David Mossom, performed the marriage of Martha Custis to Colonel George Washington on January 6, 1759, and the site remains an evocative link to the personal history of America’s first president and his wife.

Together, these stops on the History to Harvest experience blend local heritage and rural life, giving you a meaningful connection to the land, food, and stories that shaped this region of Virginia.
