We’re delighted to announce this line up of international speakers for TBEX Europe 2016 in Stockholm. You’ll see a diverse assortment of speakers, many of whom are new to the TBEX stage. And, you’ll see some popular returning speaker, many by popular request.
We’ve already announced that Lola Akinmade Akerstrom will be our closing keynote, and keep an eye out for announcements later this week about additional speakers and keynotes.
Alex & Marko Ayling
Marko and Alex Ayling are the brothers behind the YouTube travel show Vagabrothers. After working independently as travel writers and photographers, they teamed up in 2013 to win a global travel filmmaking competition, which sent them around the world to make the web series BBBTV. Since 2014, they’ve been focusing on Vagabrothers, a weekly travel show available on YouTube and Apple TV.
Alex and Marko will be speaking on the topic of how video content differs among the current platforms.
Anton Diaz worked for the biggest multinational company in the Philippines for 12+ years, straight out of college, before becoming a full-time Online Entrepreneur in 2008. OurAwesomePlanet.com, which he started in 2005, is the number #1 food and travel blog in the Philippines with close to a million hits in a month and hundreds of thousands of followers. ,His advocacy is to promote the “Food and Travel Awesomeness in the Philippines and South East Asia”!
Anton will be speaking in the Community Track about how to grow a thriving (and real) community around your blog and brand.
Betsy & Pete Wuebker
Betsy and Pete Wuebker, digital entrepreneurs since 2008, sold it all, moved to a tropical island and then turned to full time travel. They began their journey to independence from traditional work via online stores which use Print On Demand platforms. Now in their sixth year of location independence, Betsy and Pete look forward to sharing what they know with others who aspire to supplement their blog income with this type of revenue stream.
Betsy and Pete will be speaking in the Commerce Track about how to build successful online stores using print on demand. The session was a big hit in Minnesota, and following many requests, we have asked them to reprise the session in Stockholm.
Chris Christensen is the host of the Amateur Traveler, a popular online travel website that focuses primarily on travel destinations. It includes a weekly audio podcast, a video podcast, and a blog. His travel podcasts were downloaded 1.5 million times in 2015. In 2014 Chris won a Lowell Thomas Award from the SATW a SMITTY (Social Media in Travel and Tourism) award as the Best Independent Travel Journalist from Travel & Leisure.
Chris will be speaking in the Commerce track, along with Orr Shakked, about affiliate marketing, links, and google analytics. This is another session from Minnesota that we had many requests to reprise in Stockholm.
Ciaran Blumenfeld is the Founder and Ceo of Hashtracking Inc., a popular social media data and analytics tracking and display company. As a marketing professional Ciaran has consulted with dozens of companies. Her passion for visual marketing led to the development of the patent pending ColorTracking feature on Hashtracking. Ciaran is also the publisher of the popular family lifestyle blog Momfluential, where she writes about her own personal passion – travel!
Ciaran will be speaking in the Industry track about hashtag use.
David Nikel is a freelance journalist, blogger and author of the upcoming MOON Norway travel guidebook. He specializes in uncovering the real stories of life and travel in Scandinavia from his adopted home town of Trondheim, the former Viking capital of Norway.
David will be speaking in the Community track about the challenges and opportunities of blogging in the Nordic region of the world.
Gianni Bianchini is an Italian-born travel photographer and blogger on a journey around the world. With 20 years experience behind the camera in both film and digital, he is an artist who can see a photograph before he presses the shutter. To Gianni, his camera equipment is not as important as the people he works with. His aim is to capture the thoughts, stories and experiences of humanity.
Gianni will be leading a photo walk on July 14th, signs up available later this week.
Inna-Pirjetta is a leading expert in the Nordics in utilizing blogging as marketing tool. She has created the Nordic Bloggers’ Experience and has won several awards, including the Blog Marketing Award and the Evento Award. She is the co-founder of the Nordic Travel Bloggers Collective bringing together the travel related digital influencers from the Nordic countries. She is also a professional writer, family travel blogger, facilitator and published author of “Travel With Kids” handbook.

Jason Falls is a leading digital strategist, author, speaker and thinker in the digital and social media marketing industry. His strategies and ideas have touched iconic brands like General Motors, AT&T, Maker’s Mark, Humana, CafePress and Fireball Whisky, among others. He leads strategy for Elasticity, an innovative agency that blends public relations, social media, mobile and SEO to help brands adjust and excel in an ever-changing marketing landscape.
Jason will be speaking in the Industry track about conversational research around European travel consumers. This is another session from Minnesota that we received many requests to reprise in Stockholm.
Kei Shibata co-founded and runs Venture Republic that owns Japan’s largest online travel metasearch engine and online travel guide media “Travel.jp” and blogger generated online travel media “Trip101.” Previously, Kei worked at Mitsubishi Corporation, Japan’s leading trading & investment firm. He received a BA of Laws from Keio University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Kei will be speaking in the Industry track about the consumer travel buy cycle and the opportunities at each point of the cycle.
Louise Bastock worked n performing arts for a time until she was bitten by the travel bug during a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Brazil. Since then she has joined the ranks of Lonely Planet’s editorial team and spends her days drooling over stunning travel snaps and inspiring articles. Louise’s dream trip would be sailing to the Galapagos for spot of wildlife watching.
Louise will be speaking in the Content track about the importance of an editorial calendar to help in planning your content.
Matthew Kepnes runs the award winning budget travel site, Nomadic Matt. After a trip to Thailand in 2005, Matt decided to quit his job, finish his MBA and head off into the world. His original trip was supposed to last a year. Over seven years later, he is still out exploring and roaming the world.
Matt will be speaking in the Community track in an advanced session on newsletter marketing.
Michael Collins loves to travel. That’s why he works in the travel industry. It’s as simple as that. Michael started out in the travel industry as a travel publisher and then tarted TravelMedia.ie, a specialist travel PR and trade representation company, working with airlines, tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers and tourist boards, assisting them with all their travel media needs, from media buying, social media, PR, SEO and strategy.
Michael will be speaking in the Industry track about how to trend on Twitter. He will also be speaking in the Community track, along with Leslie Graham, about how to build and grow a YouTube channel. This video session is another one presented in Minnesota that we were asked to reprise for Stockholm.
Orr Shakked runs the global online marketing team at TripAdvisor. His team is responsible for display advertising, social marketing, direct partnerships, and the affiliate channel. Orr is a travel industry veteran, spending the last 12 years in the travel industry. Before TripAdvisor, Orr spent 8 years at Expedia Inc. in various product and business roles.
Orr will be speaking in the Commerce track, along with Chris Christensen, about affiliate marketing, links, and google analytics. This is another session from Minnesota that we had many requests to reprise in Stockholm
Shawn Smith (The Mobile Pro) is the author of the ground-breaking ebook and video training course, “5 Ways to Record Podcast Interviews with an iPhone”. He’s spoken at many conferences as the leading authority on Mobile Podcasting. Shawn is passionate about equipping, training, and inspiring entrepreneurs to create pro-quality content from anywhere in the world. He and his wife have also hosted over 1,400 missionaries on their annual mission trips to Guatemala.
Shawn will be leading a 2-day workshop on podcasting (more info here) and will be speaking in the Community Track on Blab.
Spud Hilton is Travel Editor of The San Francisco Chronicle and SFChronicle.com. He is a 28-year journalist who has written about, reported on and been hopelessly lost on six continents. His section and his storytelling — from Havana’s back alleys to Kyoto’s shrines to the floor of a hippie bus in Modesto — have earned 11 SATW Lowell Thomas Awards.
Spud will be leading a 2-day workshop on writing (more info here) and will be speaking in the Content track on Writing.
Tim Leffel is an award-winning writer who has been blogging continuously since 2003 with his Cheapest Destinations blog. He has published the narrative online magazine Perceptive Travel since 2006. He is the author of the books A Better Life for Half the Price, The World’s Cheapest Destinations, and Travel Writing 2.0: Earning money from your travels in the new media landscape (now in its 2nd edition).
Tim will be speaking in the Commerce track about starting a second (or third) blog, helping you decide if the work/revenue return makes sense for you.
