Southeast Montana – An Area of Contrasts

When you attend TBEX in Billings, Montana this year, you are visiting the Southeast Montana region – an area of contrasts. Here you will find the unexpected and the unique, the real American West and the history of how it came to be. This is the home of Montana’s largest city (Billings) and one of its smallest burgs (Alzada). It is where Lt. Gen. Custer and the 7thCavalry clashed with Plains Indians as they protected their way of life. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes and honors this struggle. It is where many segments of unforgiving land remain untouched and where those who live out here continue to respect that power today.

Southeast Montana is for those who travel without a guide book and a checklist – it is for the true adventurer, the uninhibited explorer. If you are comfortable on two-lane roads that stretch for miles, then this is your place.

To extend an extra welcome, we’ve created some TBEXtras (aka super offers), specifically for TBEXers. We want you to experience where the term “Big Sky” becomes reality.

B.Y.O. Sense of Adventure

Defined by its rugged beauty and vastness, this is where Montana’s majestic mountains roll out to meet the prairies and the Yellowstone River freely flows. From buttes to badlands and from coulees to canyons, Southeast Montana offers the undiscovered.

Start with a day or two in Makoshika State Park near Glendive, Montana. Pronounced Ma-ko’-shik-ka, the word means “bad soil” in Lakota. But we consider everything about this park to be good. With hiking and biking trails, camping opportunities and amazing night skies, you will be amazed with how the rising sun chases itself across the rocks.

When we say BYOB, we mean it – as in, bring your own boat. Or bike. Or boots. There are plenty of places to kayak, bike or hike in Southeast Montana. And, fall is the perfect time to do just that. We have a plethora of suggestions, like trails in the Custer Gallatin National Forest near Ekalaka or Ashland, Montana. Or, try Strawberry Hill Recreation Area or the Terry Badlands – both public lands operated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Kayakers can challenge themselves on the Yellowstone River or be awed by the 1,000 cliffs jutting from the lake in Bighorn National Recreation Area-North Unit. If you are road-tripping be sure to grab your gear.

As experienced travel professionals, you know the golden rule:  For the best information, ask a local. That rings especially true out here in Southeast Montana. And, frankly, we like it that way. So stop at Beaver Creek Brewery in Wibaux (pop. 610) for a pint and a chat. Cozy up to the Montana Bar in Miles City and ask to see the bullet hole where a cowboy’s gun discharged while he was “checking” his revolver long-ago.

Stop at the O’Fallon County Museum in Baker to marvel at the 3,890-pound Steer Montana that was rumored to gain his girth from eating bootlegger’s mash. Or, visit Twyla and Ron, volunteer guides extraordinaire, at the Powder River County Museum in Broadus – you’ll learn about the WWI soldiers who yelled “Let’er buck” and why.
