MOUNT ETNA & ALCANTARA VALLEY HIKE AND BIKE

Number of Participants: Maximum of 8 people – Minimum of 5 – ground transportation, lodging, most meals, bike rental and activities provided
Start Point: March 14th, Catania city centre (exact spot to be determined)
End Point: March 15th, Catania city centre
Transportation: Van, e-bike.

Day 1 – Saturday March 14th: Guests will travel north from Catania city centre to Mount Etna via chauffeured vehicle. This is approximately a 1-hour drive. Then e-mountain bike ride from Mount Etna to Castiglione di Sicilia (Alcantara Valley). Approx 50 km ride with 900 metres ascent with a qualified mountain bike ITA/ENG guide. Dinner and overnight stay in Castiglione di Sicilia (Alcantara Valley).

Day 2 – Sunday March 15th: Hike – Approx 4-hour hike through the Alcantara Valley National Park with a Nature ITA/ENG/FRA guide. At the end transfer back to Catania city centre.

Notes: Guests should be experienced off-road/mountain bike riders and have recently ridden, or be confident on a mountain bicycle. Please dress comfortably in warm, layered clothing and wear sturdy walking or sport shoes. Helmets are mandatory and will be provided. Participants must also be comfortable with hand brakes and riding downhill. Due to its adventurous nature, this excursion is not recommended for guests with back or neck problems.

Description: Although the town has been destroyed several times by earthquakes and lava flows, it’s still possible to admire Greek-Roman ruins  and Medieval monuments in Catania. The tour with guide will take about 3 hours with internal visits to Terme Achilliane, Ursino Castle, Terme dell’Indirizzo, Greek-Roman Theater, Terme della Rotonda, Roman Amphitheater, Bonajuto Chapel.

After the Earthquake: Catania’s New Age

Description: A professional tour guide will show you the monuments built after the earthquake that destroyed Catania in 1693 and tell you about the history of this ancient town which foundation dates back to the Greek colonization in the 8th century b.C. The tour will last about 2 hours with the following itinerary: piazza Duomo, via Vittorio Emanuele, piazza San Francesco, via Crociferi, via Teatro Greco, piazza Dante, via Gesuiti, Scalinata Alessi, via di Sangiuliano, via Manzoni, piazza Stesicoro, via Etnea, Quattro Canti, piazza Università, piazza Vincenzo Bellini, piazza San Placido, via Museo Biscari, via Dusmet, Villa Pacini, Porta Uzeda.

A “Delicious” Stroll

Description: Italian gastronomy is famous all around the world, and Catania offers a good choice of local specialties, from refreshing drinks that you can taste in the kiosks present in the central squares (e.g. lemon mandarin,seltz lemon and salt),  to “pane di casa e tavola calda”, homemade bread or pizza, from Etna DOC wine to pastries like “cannolo and cassatella” but alsoice cream and granita. Enjoy the afternoon with your guide, choosing together with him/her the “street food” you like more.

Street Art in Catania – Discovering San Berillo

Description: Not only graffiti but a pure street art can be appreciated walking in that part of the town which has been “discovered” by young and old artists in the last years helping people who live here to give a special meaning to walls, windows, doors and corners. San Berillo is not the only place in Catania where street artists use to express themselves, but it has been the first and it remains unique. Join the guide for this special tour in the earth of Catania and visit the little galleries which host young artists’ exhibitions.

Segway: the Very Different Way to Explore a Town

Description:  Standing on your electric chariot and following your guide and your Segway specialist,  you will stroll around Catania. In the Villa Pacini we learn together how to use our Segway vehicle. From here we  reach Piazza Duomo. Taking via Etnea we cross Piazza Università. From here we go to Piazza Vincenzo Bellini. Back to Via Etnea, we reach Piazza Stesicoro and then we cross the green area of the public garden, well known as “Villa Bellini”, so we reach Piazza Dante. After that we go along Via Crociferi, to arrive, after passing under the arch San Benedetto, to piazza San Francesco and then to Piazza Federico di Svevia. Finally we go back to Villa Pacini.

Nordic Walking along the Playa

Description: with your guide and the help of two walking poles you will explore the coastline from the harbour going along the sandy beach. The so called “Playa” is plenty of bathing facilities opened from May to October. But some of them are open even in the low season and are ready to invite us for a snack. Go/back the entire pleasant walk will be about 6 Km from Catania.

Volcanic landscape, Baroque churches and granita siciliana … what else? Puppet theater!

Description:  Would you like to listen about ancient myths? and learn how to make granita? and  meet a family that still organizes puppet shows? Join us in this experience! Moving from Catania by with your experienced driver-guide, you will stop along the coast to look at the Norman castle in Acicastello and at the “faraglioni” – lava pillows that gave origin to the story of  Ulisses and Polifemo. Proceeding to Acireale and stop in the Villa Belvedere to admire an amazing landscape that goes from Sicily to Calabria. On foot you will reach the Duomo and the San Sebastiano church. Before leaving Acireale stop in a traditional ice cream shop to learn the secret of the Sicilian granita, which origin dates back to the Arabian presence in Sicily and was once made with snow from Etna and fresh lemon juice. Finally visit to a traditional puppet theater and museum.
