FINGER LAKES WINE – FROM GENESIS TO THE NEXT GENERATION

Description: Finger Lakes is one of the top wine regions in the world with its steep, glacially carved slopes with rich, complex soils. Long, lean, and deep lakes that help moderate temperatures. Exceptional winemakers draw upon generations of experience and a history of ingenuity and know how. It was here that the Vinifera Revolution began! On this excursion you will learn about Finger Lakes wine-making starting with an historic tour followed by winery tours and tastings.

 

BACK TO BASICS

Description: Explore the outdoors, learn primitive skills, see what life was like in colonial times, and eat like a local on the Back to Basics tour of Tioga County. Get back to the earth at the Wilderness Way School where you will experience a crash course is nature survival skills. We will tour a restored, colonial farm and living museum with homestead demonstrations of the era, such as blacksmithing, open hearth cooking, textile arts, and more, plus tours of the farmhouse, a short hike, and locally-sourced refreshments.

 

THROUGH THE LENS: A VISUAL EXPLORATION OF ART & ARCHITECTURE

Description: Bring your camera for this one! Begin with a photo tour of the world’s largest museum devoted to glass art and artifacts at The Corning Museum of Glass in the morning light before the museum opens (and before the crowds arrive). We’ll walk along the Historic Market Street to learn about its architecture and unique history. We will end at The Rockwell Museum , a cultural center, a community gathering place, and an integral voice in telling the story of the American experience from a variety of interesting and often unheard perspectives.

 

LITERARY INSPIRATION: WALK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MARK TWAIN

Description: Hop aboard a trolley to experience the land where Mark Twain summered and wrote for over 20 years at Elmira’s Quarry Farm. You’ll step inside the study where the author penned his greatest classics—named America’s #1 Literary Attraction by USA TODAY—and pay respects at his final resting place at Woodlawn Cemetery. You’ll also visit sites affiliated with events which heavily influenced his writing, including the Civil War and the Underground Railroad. Finally, in the afternoon you can spark your inner writer with a creative writing session at Quarry Farm while overlooking the same majestic views which inspired Twain himself.

 

SOARING OVER FINGER LAKES WINE COUNTRY

Activity Level: Shorts or pants preferred, comfortable footwear. Passenger weight limit for glider rides is 235 lbs. Not wheelchair accessible.

Description: Climb aboard a glider to experience Finger Lakes Wine Country from an eagle’s point of view! Elmira is America’s Soaring Capital and the views at Harris Hill are among New York’s most spectacular. Gliders are motorless planes that are towed approximately 4,000 ft. into the air by a power plane before being released to soar silently among the clouds. Weather permitting, you’ll be able to take the skies for an unforgettable ride over the Chemung Valley. You’ll also tour the National Soaring Museum, home to the world’s largest sailplane collection, most of which are rare or one of a kind.

 

FALL FLAVORS IN THE FINGER LAKES

Description: Get a taste of fall in the Finger Lakes with a visit to Watkins Glen State Park, where we’ll enjoy fall foliage amidst 19 waterfalls! After, you’ll experience firsthand the bountiful agritourism that is alive and well in the Finger Lakes with a fun and delicious visit to a local orchard. You’ll even get to meet some rescued farm animals. From start to finish, if you love the outdoors, fresh, local food, and meeting farm animals, this is the excursion for you.
