Corning Museum of Glass

Corning Museum of Glass

View Sponsor Profile Visit Sponsor Website Think You Know About Glass? Think Again! “Wow, I had no idea.” It’s as if that phrase echoes throughout the galleries of The Corning Museum of Glass. Visitors old and young alike seem stunned by what they discover soon after walking through the door. Whatever preconceived notions they were entertaining pale in comparison to the ethereal beauty that’s found in the Contemporary Art + Design Wing, just steps from the Admissions Lobby. Think about your interactions with glass every day. You drink your juice out of it in the morning. You look through it when you peer out a window. You cook with it when you make a casserole. But did you also realize you carry it around with you every day? I’m not talking about the eye glasses on your face that help to magnify the world around you—I mean the glass in your pocket that allows you access to a world of information literally at your fingertips. From the screens of smartphones to the display glass on computer and TV screens, and even the fiber optic technology that enables it all, glass is the transparent material that connects our lives. Who knew, right? Are you already thinking about glass a little differently? That’s our goal at The Corning Museum of Glass. We tell the story of a single, transformative material. You may arrive at the Museum thinking you’ll see a Pyrex display or learn about the history of the lightbulb, but—if we do our job right—you’ll leave having just seen glass in an entirely new light. Here’s a few fun facts that might surprise you about The Corning Museum of Glass: The average visit is nearly five hours! Come find out why. Admission is valid for two consecutive days and kids 17 and under are free. CMoG has 50,000 objects in its collection, spanning 35 centuries. From floor-to-ceiling contemporary displays to meticulously crafted works from Mesopotamia, you’ll be amazed by the many forms glass can take—and by what skilled craftsmen can do with a material comprised mainly of hot sand. The Amphitheater Hot Shop is the world’s largest space in which to watch a glassblowing demo—and they happen all day, every day. You might get lucky during your visit and catch guest artists from across the world making amazingly complex creations. You can make your own glass! Yes, that’s right—at The Studio, you can work with a material hotter than volcanic lava. Choose from blown glass ornaments, pulled flowers, flameworked beads, fused glass picture frames and more. There’s nothing quite as special as a handmade souvenir. (Projects available for all ages for an additional fee.) And that’s just the beginning. During your visit to The Corning Museum of Glass, I dare you not to utter the phrase, “I had no idea!” And when you do, share what surprised you: #IHadNoIdea. Visit CMoG.org to plan your visit!

Sweet Home Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama

View Sponsor Profile Visit Sponsor Website North Alabama has Huntsville, with its U.S. Space & Rocket Center, exposes visitors to what’s beyond our earthly skies; caves and canyons spanning the foothills of the scenic Appalachia Mountains dip into what’s below. Alabama’s National Wild and Scenic River, the Sipsey, cuts through Bankhead National Forest, adding to the natural beauty. In Muscle Shoals, “The Hit Recording Capital of the World”, the highs and lows take the shape of music notes. Birmingham dominates the central region with nightlife and urban sophistication as well as the Birmingham Civil Rights District and Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. The Pinhoti Trail and biologically diverse, free-flowing Cahaba River cut across the region, giving hikers and paddlers something to enjoy. The quiet fades during races at Talladega Superspeedway and Barber Motorsports Track. At Ross Bridge, Oxmoor Valley and Silver Lakes, “drivers” take on a different look as golfers play courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The Civil War and Civil Rights Movement are celebrated in the Southern region. Montgomery was voted by readers of USA Today and www.10Best.com as America’s most historic city. The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail crosses the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma and winds its way to the State Capitol. East to Tuskegee, local museums also tell America’s civil and voting rights story. Eufaula’s Southern mansions, Dothan’s peanut past and the Alabama Scenic River Trail, make this region delightful. Sugar-sand beaches and turquoise saltwater, the Gulf Coast is like an oversized resort where every day is a vacation. Families bond over sand castles in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Dauphin Island. Seeking a day away from the beach? Mobile charms with its antebellum history. With numerous destinations to discover, from sugar-white beaches to picturesque mountaintops, Alabama presents dozens of reasons to pack up and hit the road. Visit Rochester

Visit Rochester

View Sponsor Profile Visit Sponsor Website Visit Rochester is the official tourism promotion agency for Rochester and Monroe County. Rochester is the third largest city in New York State, is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario and is the “front door” to New York's breathtaking Finger Lakes region. Considered the cultural capital of Upstate New York, Rochester was recently named one of the most arts-vibrant cities in the country by the National Center for Arts Research. Affordable and accessible, Rochester is the perfect fit for foodies, families and fans of arts and culture alike. Thanks to its proximity to the Finger Lakes (one of the most agriculturally-rich regions in the country), Rochester is filled with culinary choices with plenty of farm-to-table experiences to discover. Beer and wine is also in the city's DNA. The 100+ wineries in the Finger Lakes wine region are a short drive away, and Rochester itself is home to more than two dozen breweries, including the iconic Genesee Brewery – the oldest brewery in New York State. Rochester is home to world-class events throughout the year. The festival season (Rochester hosts more than 140 festivals each year) kicks-off with North America's largest lilac collection at Highland Park's Lilac Festival (May) where half a million visitors enjoy 10 days of brilliant floral colors, fragrance and entertainment. Downtown is alive with the sounds of jazz during the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (June) held in the City's East End Entertainment District, home to the renowned Eastman School of Music. Rochester sits at the center of 100 Must-See Miles of the Erie Canal which when opened in 1825, made Rochester the country's first “boomtown.” Today, the historic canal thrives as an active recreational waterway with towpaths, shops and charming towns telling America's story of “how the west began!” Conveniently located, Rochester is a six-hour drive from New York City, 3 1/2 hours from Toronto and 90 minutes from Niagara Falls. #visitROC Twitter Facebook Instagram

Huntsville Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau

Huntsville Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau

View Sponsor profile Visit Sponsor Website Before and during the Civil War, Huntsville was a center for railroad and river-based trade and commerce. The Tennessee River remains a favorite local spot for summertime fun. Even now, we boast one of the nation’s oldest existing railroad depots where Civil War-era graffiti still marks the walls from the Confederate soldiers who were held captive there. Unlike many Southern communities during the Civil War, Huntsville's buildings were mostly spared from destruction – leaving the Rocket City with one of the largest concentrations of antebellum homes in the South. The heart of this historic area is called Twickenham. Look at the structures across town and you’ll see a beautiful collection of antebellum homes, renovated manufacturing mills, iconic Greek Revival-style buildings, a perfectly preserved down-home hardware store – the oldest in the state – and even a few spaceships! Where else can you find that combination? In the middle of the 20th century, our bustling town became a critical support line for the U.S. Army before helping to launch the Space Race with the establishment of NASA and the Marshall Space Flight Center. Space exploration is celebrated across all of Huntsville – we are known as “Rocket City USA” after all – but it’s especially celebrated at Alabama’s most popular attraction, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Expanding further into science, technology and other industries is Cummings Research Park, the second largest in the nation. Established in 1962, this impressive consortium of more than 300 companies adds a bustling population of engineers, doctors, students and creatives. The history of Huntsville has seen numerous influxes of new faces from all over the world, which makes our history and identity an ever-changing tapestry. From humble beginnings, the “Rocket City” has grown into a future-minded place to live, work, play... and, of course, to visit! Twitter Twitter (2) Facebook Instagram Pinterest Youtube
