View Sponsor Profile Visit Sponsor Website Before and during the Civil War, Huntsville was a center for railroad and river-based trade and commerce. The Tennessee River remains a favorite local spot for summertime fun. Even now, we boast one of the nation’s oldest existing railroad depots where Civil War-era graffiti still marks the walls from the Confederate soldiers who were held captive there. Unlike many Southern communities during the Civil War, Huntsville's buildings were mostly spared from destruction – leaving the Rocket City with one of the largest concentrations of antebellum homes in the South. The heart of this historic area is called Twickenham. Look at the structures across town and you’ll see a beautiful collection of antebellum homes, renovated manufacturing mills, iconic Greek Revival-style buildings, a perfectly preserved down-home hardware store – the oldest in the state – and even a few spaceships! Where else can you find that combination? In the middle of the 20th century, our bustling town became a critical support line for the U.S. Army before helping to launch the Space Race with the establishment of NASA and the Marshall Space Flight Center. Space exploration is celebrated across all of Huntsville – we are known as “Rocket City USA” after all – but it’s especially celebrated at Alabama’s most popular attraction, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Expanding further into science, technology and other industries is Cummings Research Park, the second largest in the nation. Established in 1962, this impressive consortium of more than 300 companies adds a bustling population of engineers, doctors, students and creatives. The history of Huntsville has seen numerous influxes of new faces from all over the world, which makes our history and identity an ever-changing tapestry. From humble beginnings, the “Rocket City” has grown into a future-minded place to live, work, play... and, of course, to visit! A waterfall backdrop for a Native American love story, snow white tigers roaming with more than 130 other exotic animals, a casual meal snug in a rock canyon, rocketing to the stars at the world’s largest space museum, or jumping out of a perfectly good airplane to skydive through crisp blue southern skies. These are just a few of the surprising sights and unexpected experiences that awaits your visit to North Alabama. The region embraces the forest shrouded rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains chain and is split east-to-west by the mighty Tennessee River. The river is sliced into four tremendous recreational reservoirs by Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) dams to create well-known Guntersville Lake, Wheeler Lake, Wilson Lake, and Pickwick Lake. This setting provides a knapsack full of natural wonders and recreational experiences to complement our rich heritage destinations, eye-popping festivals, and unforgettable journeys. Let’s take a quick dash through some of the unexpected surprises in North Alabama. Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of the travel and tourism industry within the 16 northernmost counties of the state. AMLA plans and advances the economic welfare of North Alabama by advertising, promoting, and encouraging further development of the natural, historic, and man-made tourist attractions and the recreational facilities and resources of the region through the cooperative efforts and support of its 500+ members. North Alabama has Huntsville, with its U.S. Space & Rocket Center, exposes visitors to what’s beyond our earthly skies; caves and canyons spanning the foothills of the scenic Appalachia Mountains dip into what’s below. Alabama’s National Wild and Scenic River, the Sipsey, cuts through Bankhead National Forest, adding to the natural beauty. In Muscle Shoals, “The Hit Recording Capital of the World”, the highs and lows take the shape of music notes. Birmingham dominates the central region with nightlife and urban sophistication as well as the Birmingham Civil Rights District and Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. The Pinhoti Trail and biologically diverse, free-flowing Cahaba River cut across the region, giving hikers and paddlers something to enjoy. The quiet fades during races at Talladega Superspeedway and Barber Motorsports Track. At Ross Bridge, Oxmoor Valley and Silver Lakes, “drivers” take on a different look as golfers play courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The Civil War and Civil Rights Movement are celebrated in the Southern region. Montgomery was voted by readers of USA Today and www.10Best.com as America’s most historic city. The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail crosses the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma and winds its way to the State Capitol. East to Tuskegee, local museums also tell America’s civil and voting rights story. Eufaula’s Southern mansions, Dothan’s peanut past and the Alabama Scenic River Trail, make this region delightful. Sugar-sand beaches and turquoise saltwater, the Gulf Coast is like an oversized resort where every day is a vacation. Families bond over sand castles in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Dauphin Island. Seeking a day away from the beach? Mobile charms with its antebellum history. With numerous destinations to discover, from sugar-white beaches to picturesque mountaintops, Alabama presents dozens of reasons to pack up and hit the road.
