Athens is experiencing a growing global interest as a conference and meetings destination. The Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB)—a division of the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency, the official tourism board of the city—aims to make the capital of Greece the destination of choice for conventions, conferences, meetings and incentives. ACVB focuses on both the MICE and City Break sectors through destination management development marketing services.
The ACVB implements a master plan that entails actions for increasing average length of stay, smoothing out seasonality and building up the local visitors’ economy. It develops cooperation networks between the private and public sectors and strengthens connections with the international travel industry. Moreover, major tasks include branding and implementing an integrated communication and PR strategy as well as running visitor information and management services.
Its main objectives include:
To attract and generate events in Athens and the surrounding area.
To ensure that choosing Athens for staging meetings and incentives is a sound investment and a guaranteed success.
To serve as a link between planners and the local meeting industry.
To promote Athens as a business events destination.
ACVB applies the internationally recognised best practice of ‘Members Programmes’ to enterprises involved in conference tourism, such as conference centres, hotels, conference organisers, audio-visual enterprises, caterers etc. ACVB by 2012 reached a total of more than 100 members. Thousands of readers of the MICE Report, an internationally renowned magazine for business travellers, voted ACVB as the best Convention & Visitors Bureau in South-Eastern Europe during its annual awards.
